In this quickly developing nation, Singapore Botanic Gardens is one of its historic treasures. It was founded in 1859 by a local horticultural society, based on a previous version by Singapore founder Sir Stamford Raffles. Today it is managed by the national government and is a world leader in topical botany.
The Singapore Botanic Gardens has six major attractions, the chief one being the National Orchid Garden. The National Orchid Garden has more than 1,000 species of orchids and more than 2,000 hybrids. It is especially interesting for its “cool house” that duplicates a tropical highland forest. Here, it is possible to see orchids unavailable elsewhere.
There is also a 6 hectare actual rainforest that gives you a chance to see an ancient rainforest within a busy urban environment. It is one of only two tropical rainforests within a city (the other is in Rio De Janiero).
The ginger garden features aromatic plants from the ginger family. It is a very popular spot, both for the familiar scent as well as for the garden’s waterfall.
The botany centre has made the Singapore Botanical Gardens a leading site for tropical botanical study. The centre includes a library, a herbarium and classrooms. The centre is distinctive for its truly “green roof” made up of grassy plants. The pitched roof covers the food court and the visitor services center.
The Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden includes a playground, a water area, tree houses and a maze. Young visitors can learn about photosynthesis and other plant processes and how plants are used in beverages, foods and dyes. One very special feature of the children’s garden is the “Mystree”, designed by sculptor Zodok Ben-David as a tribute to the martyrs of the Holocaust. This “tree” is composed of 500 figures to symbolize how humankind is interrelated.
The Singapore Botanical Gardens has many smaller exhibits as well; including a bandstand, Eco-Lake, Palm Valley the Saraca Stream walk, a sun garden, a sundial garden, Symphony Lake and Swan Lake. Yes, live music concerts often take place at the Gardens, often featuring the local symphonies, orchestras and other performers.
Singapore Botanical Gardens is already relatively large, more than 2.5 km long. It continues to grow, however. Plans are in the works to develop additional gardens, including a healing garden, a fragrant garden, a terrace garden, and an ethno botany garden (devoted to the study of the plant life of a people).
There are many places in the garden to enjoy a meal including Au Jardin Les Amis, Café les Amis and the Halia Restaurant. Here it is possible to feed your body and your soul while still in the heart of bustling Singapore.
Not only is Singapore Botanic Garden conveniently located, it is also open from 5 a.m. to midnight daily and admission to all but the National Orchid Garden is free of charge. Admission to the National Orchid Garden is currently $5 for adults, $1 for students and senior citizens.
